Canine Splash

Location:
Address:
402 Vulcan Street, Suite 103, Buffalo, New York 14207

Edited on 7/6/14: Canine Splash has closed as of June 30th.

Canine Splash offers an unexpected service to Buffalo-area dogs - swimming! Strictly speaking, they are a "pool rental facility", as their website states. You can rent pool time for your dog (while you stay on the decking or floor), in pools of 3 different sizes. If you want help, you can pay a little more for a "Trainer Assisted Session". They also have "Intro to Water" sessions for dogs who are completely new to swimming and need to get comfortable with it. This is a great way to get your dog some physical activity when the weather outside is less than ideal!

Melanie, mom to Zoey and Ziggy, told us about her experience at Canine Splash:

"I took the pups there for a couple of training sessions with Miranda to get them comfortable with the water. It was wonderful for when we went to dog camp in Lake George as they were able to swim with and without vests, and able to swim to the steps, and get out on their own, and also feel comfortable in the water and not panic. Miranda was wonderful, very patient, and knew exactly how to make them feel comfortable and coax them into the water."

Animal Outfitters

Location:
Address:
986 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo, NY 14222

Located in the Elmwood Village, Animal Outfitters describes itself as "Buffalo's first and only specialty shop for dogs and cats and the people who love them!"

This is not your average pet store. They carry an assortment of items including toys, collars and leashes, feeding bowls, clothes, aromatherapy, specialty litter, and gift items for pets and people. Owner Omar (with his dog Star) goes out of his way to greet visitors and make them feel welcome. And now, not only can you and your dog browse the inside of the store together, you can also sit at the outdoor cafe, added in summer 2013. That summer, Ren and I were taking a class on using obedience behaviors while walking in real-world settings, and our class stopped at the Animal Outfitters cafe for a break. Each of our dogs had some of the frozen yogurt that was for sale, and I'm pretty sure Ren loved his!

Right now, the playgroups, known as "Puppy Parties" are only open to dogs 6 months and under. Due to space limitations they do not currently have any other playgroups, but that may change in the future.

Ren is a graduate of several of their obedience classes. They offer a wide variety of topics, including walking on a leash, tricks, and preparation for the Canine Good Citizen test.
