Rootie's Run is a dog park in Hamburg, which opened in July 2011. It was named after Rootie, a beagle found on Route 5, who was the inspiration for starting the park. It is open year-round, dawn to dusk.

As with most dog parks, there are separate sections for small and large dogs, both spacious. For extra fun, there is even a fire hydrant in the small dog section!

Knox Farm Dog Park

Category:
Location:
Address:
437 Buffalo Road, East Aurora, NY 14052
Park Type:
State
Managing Organization:
Friends of Knox Farm State Park
Size:

5 acres (reference)

Notable Features:
Huge Size

Knox Farm State Park is the former country estate of the Knox family. Not only is it a beautiful location for taking your dog on a walk, but it also has a dog park with plenty of space for running around off-leash. Normal leash laws apply in the rest of the park. To get there, go through the main entrance on Buffalo Road and park your car. Walk past the building marked "Visitor Center" and you'll find the dog park.

The park was created from a former sheep pasture on the farm. At 5 acres, this must be one of the largest dog parks in the area. If your dog loves running or playing fetch, this is an excellent place to spend time with them. And like most dog parks there are separate areas for small dogs vs. dogs of all sizes.

Which brings me to one minor gripe. If the "all dog" area was made from a former pasture, the "small dog" area looks to have been added as an afterthought. Although the small dog area is probably of a similar size to the small dog areas of other parks, it looks to be barely 5% of the size of the main area, making it not so appealing by comparison. Given a choice to play with your dog in an area the size of a football field (photo at left), or the size of someone's backyard (photo at lower right), which would you choose? So despite the fact that it was very busy on the day we went, and there were plenty of smaller dogs there, none of the owners had decided to use the small dog area.

But this is probably not an issue for most dogs. Ren's size (6 pounds) means there is always a risk of him getting knocked over, and he is also a bit nervous/defensive around much larger dogs, so my preference would have been for him to just be in an area with dogs closer to his size. So I do admit that I'm letting a bit of my subjective opinion into this description. But it's not a deal-breaker. Similar to when I take him to Ellicott Creek Island (where there is no size separation) I just make sure to keep close to him, and get him out of the way if he is in danger of being bumped into by a larger excited dog. For the vast majority of dog owners, this is not even an issue - if your dog isn't so tiny and is comfortable with a variety of sizes, you will both have a great time.

Golden Tails Pet Supply

Category:
Address:
6511 Transit Rd, Bowmansville NY 14026

Golden Tails is a small locally-owned pet supply shop. Here, you'll find some food brands not sold at PetSmart/PetCo, such as Fromm, Orijen and Taste of the Wild. They also have a wide selection of bully sticks and other natural chews. The store occasionally holds special events, such as photos with Santa or the Easter Bunny. And their two resident cats are also ready to greet shoppers as they browse.

This store may be a bit hard to find if you've never been there before - they are in the Bella Vista Plaza, located behind Lancaster Storage on Transit Road. In fact, they are right by Fetch n' Catch, making it really convenient for us to pick up his Fromm kibble on our way back from playgroup.

When you sign up for the walk, you can create a new team or join an existing team. You are asked to make an initial donation: $20 to walk with one dog, and $40 with two. You can of course donate more, and are also asked to collect donations from others, which is easy to do thanks to automatic Facebook integration.
