Tribute to Ren, 2012-2016

Just under 2 months ago, I posted on the Ren's List Facebook page that Ren had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Having had some time to grieve, I'd like to explain a bit more about Ren and the future of this site. I won't go into specifics about what happened, but it was a tragic accident for which I blame myself, and always will. Thankfully, it most likely was over quickly, meaning he did not have time to suffer.

Ren was my first dog and I was not prepared for how much I would fall in love with him. I adopted him at 12 weeks old, and not having any human children, I right away referred to myself as his mother. I thought about him every day: about how I looked forward to seeing him when I got home from work, what we were going to do together that day, how lucky I was to have him, and that in some ways I still couldn't believe I'd finally had a dog after years of wanting one. I told him every day that I loved him, sometimes multiple times. I always knew that when Ren's time came, I would take it hard. But the fact that he was only a few weeks away from being 4 years old, and by something I could have prevented, has put me into the worst emotional pain I've ever felt in my life.

A day after Ren's passing, when I wrote that Facebook post, I wasn't sure what to do. I want to be happy about what time we did have together, but the memories also bring me sadness, guilt and regret. Could I continue this site without him?

I have now decided that, yes, I will. Ren was truly my reason and inspiration for this website, and I think that continuing it, with the same name, would be a great tribute to him and a way for his memory to live on. I will now be better about updating the site more frequently, along with the Facebook page. I do plan to get another dog, when both the time and dog are right, but so far, that hasn't happened yet. In the mean time, I'll be providing information about upcoming dog-friendly events and asking others to help with the reporting on new dog playgroups and other facilities.

I'd like to thank everyone for the kind words and support for the last 2 months, including those who replied to my Facebook message, those who knew Ren from playgroups and other activities, and my friends and family.

In closing, I'd like to show a drawing of Ren. This was created by Morgan Spicer at Bark Point Studio who makes drawings based on photographs of your pet. It shows the way I like to think of Ren now: near the Rainbow Bridge, surrounded by the grass and trees that he loved to smell and run around in. I'll always love you, my baby.
